According to Egyptian media reports, the Red Sea No. 1 Container Terminal located at the Port of Sokhna in Egypt recently commenced commercial operations. The terminal is operated by a consortium comprising Hutchison Ports Group, CMA CGM Group, and COSCO Shipping Group.
The Red Sea No. 1 Container Terminal is an important component of the overall development plan for the Port of Sokhna, which in turn serves as a key link in the Sokhna-Alexandria Integrated Logistics Corridor. This corridor is designed to connect the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea, further strengthening Egypt’s role in global supply chains. The commissioning of this terminal marks significant progress in the Egyptian government’s plan to position the country as a regional hub for transportation, logistics, and transshipment.
On the day of the launch ceremony, the container ship “CMA CGM IRON,” operated by CMA CGM and sailing from Beirut, arrived at the terminal, carrying approximately 13,000 containers. At this point, only one month had passed since the automated terminal began its trial operations.
The Red Sea No. 1 Container Terminal has ushered in a new phase of smart, green port operations in Egypt. The harbor basin where the terminal is located has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s deepest artificial harbor basin. The first-phase project has already completed a berth measuring 1,200 meters in length and 18 meters in depth, with an initial annual handling capacity of 1.7 million TEUs. In the future, the terminal’s capacity is planned to be expanded to 3.5 million TEUs, and the total length of its shoreline will also be extended to 2.6 kilometers.
The terminal is equipped with Egypt’s first six remotely operated quay cranes and 18 automated rubber-tired gantry cranes, and it utilizes the proprietary terminal operating system nGen to enable precise, real-time tracking of containers. The integration of an automated gate system with digitalized operations has enhanced operational efficiency and safety, while also improving the working environment for employees. In line with Hutchison Ports Group’s global sustainability strategy, the terminal uses exclusively electric cargo-handling equipment—including electric trucks and electric straddle carriers—significantly reducing carbon emissions.
This port has long been committed to promoting innovation and economic growth, playing a pivotal role in diversifying trade and deepening international cooperation. Its construction reflects the strong economic ties between Egypt and its global partners, and it also creates favorable conditions for expanding global trade opportunities.
