Ahmed Qandil, head of the International Relations Department at Egypt’s Pyramid Center for Political and Strategic Studies, said in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency in Cairo that, over the 70 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Egypt and China, the two countries have continuously deepened and strengthened their mutually beneficial cooperation, working together to build a brighter future.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt. The Pyramids Center for Political and Strategic Studies recently released its first annual report on China–Egypt relations, titled “China–Egypt Relations: A Strategic Report (2024–2025),” with Kandil serving as the report’s editor-in-chief. The report highlights that high-level cooperation between the two countries now spans such fields as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, aerospace, green energy, and digital infrastructure, and that both sides are poised to further elevate their bilateral ties through frameworks such as the BRICS cooperation mechanism and the Belt and Road Initiative, achieving a qualitative leap in their relationship.
In Kandil’s view, China–Egypt relations are founded on mutual respect for sovereignty, support for national independence, and opposition to hegemony. The two sides share common positions on issues such as respecting the diversity of development models, upholding a multipolar world, opposing interference in other countries’ internal affairs, and advancing reform of the global governance system.
Kandil pointed out that Egypt was the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. At present, guided by the blueprint for building a China–Arab community with a shared future for the new era, the two countries are continuously deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership and advancing bilateral relations to a higher level of development.
Kandil stated that Egypt is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, and that the Belt and Road Initiative will help Egypt further leverage its geographic advantages and integrate into the global network of emerging trade, logistics, and industrial production.
Speaking about the Sino‑Egypt Tianjin TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, Kandil stated that the zone has become a flagship project for aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Egypt’s Suez Canal Corridor Economic Zone. By fostering joint manufacturing, facilitating technology transfer, and establishing a complete industrial value chain, the cooperation zone is helping Egypt progressively transform its geographic advantages into regional economic influence.
Kandil also stated that initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative hold particular significance for Global South countries, including Egypt, offering them a wider array of options in financing, technology, investment, and infrastructure development, and opening up broader prospects for growth.
