In the presence of high-ranking officials, including Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority Walid Gamal El-Din, Zhou Guoquan, Executive Director of Zhongtian Steel Group, and Cao Hui, Executive Director of Egypt’s Teda Zone Development Company, recently signed a formal agreement at the Prime Minister’s Office in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital. The project, which will produce core materials for automotive tires and involves a total investment of US$300 million, has been established in the Teda Cooperation Zone.

The project covers an area of approximately 320,000 square meters and focuses on producing steel cord and bead wire—key structural components in the manufacture of radial tires. The facility is slated to produce 120,000 tons of steel cord and 50,000 tons of bead wire annually. Upon commissioning, it will directly create roughly 1,000 local jobs, with about 30% of its output destined for export to the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.

Egypt is a key automotive production and consumption market in Africa, with domestic vehicle assembly capacity exceeding 700,000 units and more than 250 international component suppliers. However, core tire reinforcement materials such as steel cord and bead wire have long relied almost entirely on imports. The Zhongtian Steel project will, for the first time in Egypt, enable large-scale production of these two critical materials. According to Gamal El-Din, the project will integrate industrially with existing tire manufacturers within the Teda Cooperation Zone, fostering a more comprehensive production ecosystem. This initiative also represents an important implementation of Egypt’s National Industrial Strategy 2026–2030 in the automotive sector, which designates automobile manufacturing as one of seven priority industries and seeks to promote the localization of both complete vehicles and components.

To date, the TEDA Cooperation Zone has attracted more than 200 enterprises, giving rise to multiple industrial clusters in areas such as new‑type building materials, new energy, and mechanical manufacturing. The Zhongtian Steel project represents another landmark initiative within the zone’s automotive‑parts ecosystem, further helping Egypt address gaps in its automotive supply chain, accelerating the development of a regional hub for advanced manufacturing and exports, and elevating China–Egypt capacity‑cooperation to a higher level.
